Call for abstracts:
Oral and Poster presentations

Scientific papers on topics related to the SIPS 2021 Conference themes are welcome for consideration as oral or poster presentations. All abstracts must be submitted electronically via the Submission page by January 15, 2021.

Topics relevant to SIPS 2021 Conference include:

Human research related to placebo and nocebo effects

  • Pain
  • Alcohol use disorders
  • Other drug use disorders

Animal research related to placebo and nocebo effects

  • Pain
  • Alcohol use disorders
  • Other drug use disorders

Other related to placebo and nocebo effects


Authors may select presentation formats when submitting an abstract, including:

  • Poster presentation
  • Oral presentation

Accepted posters will be displayed online, which requires the author(s) to provide a PowerPoint slide of the poster.  
Oral presentations will be selected and assigned to compliment specific panel sessions. Author(s) must indicate if they are available to attend onsite or can only participate via webcast.
The Scientific Program Committee reviews all applications with a view toward the quality of the proposed scientific program. Abstracts may be rejected if they do not comply with the general concepts or requirements described in the guidelines below, or if they have low-quality scientific programs, duplication of major SIPS 2021 sessions and events. While the Scientific Program Committee makes every effort to honor requests, due to space limitations, the committee cannot guarantee preferences.

General submission information

  • An individual may be the first author on more than one abstract and may submit more than one abstract.
  • Authors must complete the entire abstract application for consideration.
  • The official SIPS 2021 Conference language is English; therefore abstracts need to be written in English
  • All completed and submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee using a “blind” selection process.
  • All information for first and all co-authors must be included in the submission.
  • All authors will complete a conflict of interest (COI) form
  • Only abstracts completed by the posted deadline will be reviewed

  • Abstracts will be scored using the following criteria:
    • Thematic Relevance: Is it relevant to one or more of the SIPS 2021 themes and topics?
    • Quality of Content: Is the application understandable for people not familiar with the field?
    • Significance: Is the subject relevant for placebo research?
    • Originality: Does the proposal bring new perspectives, approaches or evidence on a particular subject?
  • All information for first and all co-authors must be included in the submission.
  • All authors will complete a conflict of interest (COI) form
  • Only abstracts completed by the posted deadline will be reviewed
  • Acceptance letters will be sent via e-mail. Relevant information about your abstract’s presentation including the presentation date, time, venue, presentation number will be included in the acceptance letters. The presenting author of the abstract must be registered for the Conference.
  • Accepted abstracts will be made available to all registered participants
  • All abstracts should acknowledge the source of funding that supported the work. Please note: Titles and co-authors cannot be changed/added/deleted after the abstract submission. Be certain your information is complete and correct upon abstract submission. All submitted abstracts are considered to be confidential. To maintain confidentiality, only members of the Scientific Committee will be permitted access to the abstracts.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts must be organized in the following format:

  • Background
  • Methods
  • Results
  • Conclusions

Authors will:

  • Limit abstract narrative to 250 words.
  • Omit any table or illustration from abstract
  • Use only generic names of drugs when referring to pharmacological substances.

Abstracts will be not be accepted if they do not adhere to the ethical principles for clinical (human) and animal research.

Commercial Bias

  • All abstracts must be devoid of commercial bias. Trade names should not be used in referencing drugs, devices or instrumentation. Any medications or other substances referred to in the presentation material should be identified by their generic name or description.
  • After the submission is completed, the sender will receive a confirmation email to the address indicated at submission.

Author guidelines

As first author, you will:

  • be the main contact person for the abstract, 
  • assure all information for co-authors is submitted
  • assure co-authors are informed of all communications
  • ensure accuracy of content, spelling and author information, including listing order since abstracts are directly exported from the submission database for publication.

Please review your submission carefully to make sure that all appropriate data and all authors are listed and in the correct order.

No changes to body copy, data or authors will be accepted after the submission deadline of January 15,2021.


Abstract Author Disclosure of Financial Relationships

Each author included in the abstract must complete their own online Conflict of Interest (COI) and Disclosure of Financial Relationships by or the abstract will not be accepted.

Disclosure of relevant financial relationships includes the commercial interest name, the role played, and what was received.

Meeting Registration

All authors who will be attending the SIPS 2021 Conference must register online for the meeting and pay any applicable registration fees. The meeting registration site will open in January, 2021. 

The registration of at least one author is required for application acceptance and publication in the Conference Book.
